– Geographic location: Lang Son is bounded by Cao Bang province to the North, by Bac Kan and Thai Nguyen provinces to the West and South – West, by Bac Giang province to the South, by China to the North-East and by Quang Ninh province to the South-East.

– Area: 8,327.6 km2

– Topographic features: The popular kind of terrain in Lang Son is low mountains and hills covering over 80% of the province’s total area. The average altitude is 252m above sea level level. The lowest point is 20m height above sea level while the highest point (Phia Me peak belongs to Mau Son chain) is 1,541 m height.

– Administrative unit: Lang Son city and 10 districts: Trang Dinh, Van Lang, Van Quang, Binh Gia, Bac Son, Huu Lung, Chi Lang, Cao Loc, Loc Binh and Dinh Lap.

– Population: 735,600 people

Resources

– Natural resources: The province’s total natural land area is 830,521 hectares with three main types of land: feralit, humus feralit, peat which are suitable for many kinds of annual agricultural plants, industrial trees, timbers. Mineral resources are not much in Lang Son, mine reserves are limited but various in types such as brown coal in Na Duong, peat in Binh Gia, phosphorus in Huu Lung, boxit in Van Lang, Cao Loc, gold in Tan Van, Van Mic (Binh Gia district).

– Tourism resources: Lang Son which is located in the northern border area has convenient transportation to connect to Hanoi. Lang Son has many places of interest such as Ky Lua market street, Stone statue of Lady To Thi, Tam Thanh pagoda, Nhi Thanh cave, Ky Cung river’s stone wharf, Mau Son tourist place, Wind grotto, etc. The borderline markets are also great attractions to visitors. Lang Son is also reputed because of owning many historical places such as Nam Quan Pass, Chi Lang pass, the citadel of Mac dynast, Bac Son revolutionary base. Moreover, there are also unique traditional festivals that attract tourists.

– Human resources: In 2010, the people of working age were 460,358 (accounted for 62.79%), in which 50.71% was female workers. The percentage of rural labor was 79.78% while that of civil labor was 20.22%.

Infrastructure

– Transportation system: Lang Son has convenient transportation with many national highways running through the province such as national highways No. 1A, 4B, 31, and 279, 2 railway routes: Hanoi – China route (100km long in Lang Son) and Lang Son – Na Duong route. Motorways are developed in 222/226 units. Inter-village roads are developed gradually, ensuring to support goods transport.

– Power supply system: Lang Son has Na Duong thermal power station with the total capacity of 100MW. 6 construction projects are planned to construct in the very near future. National grid, including 110KV, 35KV, 10KV, 6KV 0.4KV lines covers all 10 districts and Lang Son city.

– Water supply and drainage system: 12 underground water pumping stations with the total capacity of 14,000m3/day were installed in Lang Son city. Clean water system with the total capacity of 13,000m3/day supplies towns, centre of districts while suburban households are supplied water by drilled rings or dug rings.

– Postal system: Modern digital telecommunication system that transfers microwaves to 11/11 districts city and 100% communes and border gates was connected by optical fiber. The using landline telephone rate was 12.6/100 capita.

– Industrial zone: 2 industrial zones: Hong Phong IZ (321.7hectares) and Dong Banh IZ (250 hectares) 

Economic situation

– The growth rate: Lang Son’s Economy develops quite rapidly compared to the average national rate. The average growth of GDP in the period of 2006-2010 reached 10.45%. In 2010, GDP per capita was 820USD.
