General information

- Geographic location: Lao Cai is a border mountainous province. It is 296km railway and 345km road from Hanoi. Lao Cai is bounded by Ha Giang province to the East; by Son La and Lai Chau provinces to the West; by Yen Bai province to the South and by Yunnan of China to the North.

- Area: 6,383.9 km²

- Topographic features: Lao Cai is situated in the valley of Red river and Chay river with high mountain ranges, creating strongly partitioned topography. Its average high above sea level level varies from 80m to 3,000, typically the Hoang Lien Son mountain range with Fan xi pan top of 3,143m above sea level.

- Administrative unit: Lao Cai city and 8 districts: Bao Thang, Bat Xat, Bac ha, Muong Khuong, Sapa, Si Ma Cai and Van Ban.

- Population: 626,200 people

Resources

- Natural resources: Lao Cai is rich in mineral resources. Up to now 150 mines with more than 30 types of mineral have been discovered here including the largest and the most quality ones like Apatit in Cam Duong with the reserves of 2.5 billion ton, Quy Xa iron mine with the reserves of 124 million ton, Sin Quyen copper mine with the reserves of 53 million ton, O Quy Ho Molipden mine with the reserves of 154,000 ton. Besides the province’s land and forestry resources are plentiful, which are good for developing agriculture-forestry.

- Tourism resources: Lao Cai has great potentiality for developing tourism with various types such as convalesce, eco-tourism, trekking, cultural tours, etc. Lao Cai is endowed with many places of interest such as Sa Pa, Bac Ha, Bat Xat, Muong Khuong, etc of which Sa Pa is the most famous one nationwide and in the world.

- Human resources: In 2010, Lao Cai’s population was 6,126,200 people, in which 52% was people in working age. Young, rich and hard-working labor is one of the advantages of the province that attract investors.

Infrastructure

- Transportation system: Unlike other mountainous provinces, the province’s has a various transportation network including roadway, railway, and waterway. Now there are 4 national highways running through the province with the total length of 356km (National highways No. 70, 4D, 4E, 279). Hanoi-Lao Cai Highway with 264km length and 4 lines was constructed in 4/2009 and estimated be to completed in 2012. It will reduce the time spent to travel from Hanoi to Lao Cai to 3 hours. It is also linked to Con Minh – Ha Khau highway (China) via Kim Thanh bridge that creates a smooth connection among Con Minh - Lao Cai - Hanoi - Hai Phong.Besides, the rail line Hanoi-Lao Cai is linked to China. In the near future, airport will possibly be available.

- Power supply system: National grid was covered 100% units. Moreover, 68 electricity projects with the total capacity of 882MW were invested.

- Water supply and drainage system: Clean water system was installation in all districts and city of the province.

- Post-telecommunication system: There are 57 optical fibers, 30 microwaves lines and 170 BTS stations in the province. The landline telephone density is 32/100 people. The number of Internet account is 11,900, in which there are 5,672 broadband accounts.

- Industrial zones: Lao Cai has 4 industrial zones which are Bac Duyen Hai Industrial zone in Lao Cai city with the area of 80hectares, Tang Loong Industrial zone with the area of 350 hectares in Bao Thang district, Dong Pho Moi Industrial zone in Lao Cai city and Kim Thanh commercial industrial zone.

Economic situation

- Growth rate: In the period of 2006-2010, the average growth rate of GDP was 13%. The average GDP per capita was 10.43 million VND per year.
