General information

- Geographic location: The province is bounded by Cambodia to the north, Vĩnh Long to the south, Long An andTiềnGiang to the east, CầnThơ and An Giang to the west.

- Area: 3375.4 km2.

- Topographic features: ĐồngTháp is divided into two major areas: the north area of Tiền river is quite flat and slightly slopes from northwest to southeast; the south area of Tiền river has a shape of concave lying between two river banks.

- Administrative units: Include Cao Lanh city and the towns of Hong Ngu, Sa Đéc and 9 districts: Tân Hồng, Hồng Ngự, Tam Nông, ThanhBình, ThápMười, Cao Lãnh, LấpVò, Lai Vung, Châu Thành. 

- Population: 1,667,700 people
 

Resources

- Natural resources: The province is endowed by nature with an endless fresh water resource including many rivers and chanels. It has various land resource include alluvial soil, alum soil, grey soil. The alluvial soil area accounts for over 50%, convenient for cultivation of vegetables, short term industrial crops and fruit trees. Besides, Đồng Tháp has various forest resources with over 10,000 hectares of cajuput forest. The province mineral resources include building sand, ceramic clay, kaolin and peat.

- Tourism resources: The province has many tourism areas as GòT háp, Xẻo Quýt vestige area, junior doctor Nguyễn Sinh Sắc mausoleum, national bird park of Tràm Chim, Tháp Mười, Tân Quy Đông flower village (Sa Đéc rose garden) etc. Besides, there are many inteprovincial tours from Hồ Chí Minh to Đồng Tháp, and from Đồng Tháp to An Giang, Cần Thơ, Vũng Tàu, Đà Lạt, Nha Trang etc.

- Human resources: Labour force accounts for 52% population with an annual increase of 27,000 – 28,000. Trained labor accounted for 40% population in 2010. 82.71% labor force are working in agriculture, 6.05% in industry and construction; 11.24% in service sector.

Infrastructures

- Transportation system: The province has waterway and roadway. Waterway: ĐồngTháp has 339 rivers, channels with 2,838 km long forming a convenient waterway system. Roadway: The province has 2,700 km roadway. There are important highways running through the province such as National highway No.30 connecting Cabodia to national highway No.1A and to TiềnGiang, Long An, HồChí Minh city, ĐồngNai, BàRịa-VũngTàu; National highway No.80 connecting National highway No.1A to An Cống ferry; National highway No.54 along Hậu river from An Cống to TràVinh. Besides, ĐồngTháp has 2 ports of Sa Đéc and ĐồngTháp, convenient for goods transportation to other provinces and to international markets.

- Power supply system: All communes have power supplied, over 98% households are using electricity supplied by the national grid. All industrial zones have high voltage and medium voltage power supply for production.

- Water supply system: The province is capable of supplying clean water for living and production in urban areas. The percentage households in rural area accessed to clean water was increasing gradually.

- Post and telecommunication system: Apart from the central post office, there are 10 district post offices and 37 post offices in towns and resident areas. All communes have telephone communication with average 12.24 set /100 persons (1.98 set/100 persons in 2000).

- Industrial zones: Dong Thap now has three Industrial zones which are Sa Dec IZ, Tran Quoc Toan IZ and Song Hau IZ. It is planned that more four industrial zones 1,750 hectares large would be constructed.
