General information

- Geographic location : The city is bounded by Bình Dương in the north, by Tây Ninh in the north west, by Đồng Nai in the north and the north west, by Bà Rịa -Vũng Tàu in the south east, by Long An and Tiền Giang in the west and the south west.

- Area: 2,095.5km2

- Topographic features: Hồ Chí Minh city is located between the South East area and the Mekong delta. The terrain gradually slopes from the north to the south and from the east to the west.

- Administrative units: Include 19 inner districts of: No.1, No.2, No.3, No.4, No.5, No.6, No.7, No.8, No.9, No.10, No.11, No.12, Bình Thạnh, Thủ Đức, Tân Phú, Gò Vấp, Tân Bình, Phú Nhuận, Bình Tân and 5 suburban districts of: Bình Chánh, Hóc Môn, Cần Giờ, Củ Chi, Nhà Bè.

- Population: 7,165,200 people

Resources

- Natural resources: Local mineral resources are mainly building materials such as clays, sand, grit and grave; raw materials for ceramics and fluxes; other materials such as peat etc. There are only few minerals that could meet partly the needs of the city, which are raw materials for building materials andglass ceramics and so on. The capacity of other minerals such as ferrous metals, nonferrous metals (excepting Aluminum), coal are minor.

- Tourism resources: Hồ Chí Minh city has famous places of interest such as Suối Tiên,Kỳ Hoà, Bình Quới, Thủ Đức, Đầm Sen cultural park, Madonna Church, Union palace, Củ Chi tunnel, Nhà Rồng wharf…

- Human resources: In 2010, the number of workers in working age was 4.7 million, of which 3.2 million workers work in economic sector. The scientific staff and experts in specific fields accounted for 30 % that of whole country. The proportion of trained labor increased from 40% in 2005 to 55% in 2010.

Infrastructures

- Transportation system: The system is quite convenient with four means of transportation: Roadway, railway, waterway and airway. Roadway: Hồ Chí Minh city is a transportation hub in the South. From here people and vehicles can go to Tay Ninh by National highway No. 22, to Vũng Tàu by National highway No. 51, to Đà Lạt by road No. 20, and to the west and the central provinces by National highway No.1A. Railway: the city has 4 railway stations, the one in Saigon center is the biggest station. Waterway: The city has the ports of Sài Gòn, Bến Nghé, Nhà Bè oil port, Tân Cảng, Tân Thuận, Container port of processing zone etc. Airway: The city has Tân Sơn Nhất international airport, one of the two biggest airports in Vietnam.

- Post and telecommunication system: The system of post & telecommunication and internet is of international standard, which can provide effective, reliable and high quality services such as ADSL, rapid data transfer, wide broadband MAN designed as “one system, multi services”

- Industrial zones: The city has 15 industrial zones and processing zones: Bình Chiểu (27 ha); Cát Lái (111 ha) ; Hiệp Phước (332 ha) ; Lê Minh Xuân (100 ha) ; Phong Phú (163 ha) ; Tân Bình (125 ha); Tân Phú Trung (552 ha); Tân Tạo (442 ha) ; Tân Thới Hiệp (215 ha); Noth West of Củ Chi (220 ha) ; Vĩnh Lộc (200 ha) ; Linh Trung 1 (62 ha); Linh Trung 2 (63 ha); Tân Thuận (300 ha).h

Economic status

- Growth rate: Although the population of Ho Chi Minh city accounts for the merely 0.6% and the area comprises of 8.34% the country area its GDP participant is 20.2%, its industrial product value accounts for 27.9% and it attracts 34.9% foreign investment projects. In the period of 2006-2010, the average growth rate of GDP was 11% per year.

- Economic structure: There is a little change in its economic structure. The proportion of agriculture – forestry – aquaculture went down slightly while that of industry and construction remained stable on the major place.

Investment attraction status

From 1988 to 2011 (March), Ho Chi Minh city is the city attracting the highest number of foreign projects which is 3,952 ones with the total capital of 30.53 billion USD.

In 2010, there were375 new projects permitted to operate and 113 projects put more investment capital. Even though the number of projects in 2010 was less than that in 2009 the investment capital of new projects was 1.89 increasing by 81.46% compared to 2009. The total capital of projects including old and new ones was 441.45 million USD rising by 18.94% opposed to 2009 and 0.9 % compared to the planned number of the committee.

In the first half of 2011, Ho Chi Minh city attracts the largest FDI capital which was 1.5 billion USD. The city focuses on developing IT, media, biotechnology, automate, alternative power and new materials. It also focuses on operating high-tech industrial zones, specific industrial zones, high-tech agricultural area and high-tech medical zones.
