General information

- Geographic location: The province is bounded by Gia Lai to the north, Lâm Đồng to the south, Phú Yên and Khánh Hoà to the east, Đắc Nông and Cambodia to the west.

- Area: 13,139.2 km2

- Topographic features: There are three types of terrains. Mountainous area in the south and eastern south covering 35% province natural area; Flat high land in the central covering 53% province natural area; The remain area is flat land in the north.

- Administrative units: Include Ban Mê Thuột city, Buon Ho town and 13 districts: Krông Buk, Krông Pak, Lăk, Ea Súp, M’Drăk, Krông Ana, Krông Bông, Ea H’leo, Cư M’gar, Krông Năng, Buôn Đôn và Ea Kar and Cu Kuin.

- Population: 1,759,100 people

Resources

- Natural resources: The soils in Đăk Lăk are of basalt origin with high fertility. The province has 4 soil types: alluvial soil, gley soil, grey soil and red soil. The red soil is really suitable for cultivation of valuable industrial crops such as coffee, rubber, tea, pepper, fruit trees, etc. This is an important advantage for the province’s agriculture development. The province also has various mineral resources such as Kaolin (in M’DRăk, Buôn Ma Thuột), ceramic clay (in Krông Ana, M’DRăk, Buôn Ma Thuột), gold (in Ea Kar), lead (in Ea H’Leo), phosphate (in Buôn Đôn).

- Tourism resources: Daklak is a mountainous province with great tourism potentiality. There are many famous waterfalls such as Krông Kmar, Bảy Nhánh, Thủy Tiên, Ba Tầng etc, many water reservoirs such as Lăk, Ea Kao, Ea Đờn etc, which are really suitable for canoeing, water skiing, fishing, and other entertainment activities. There are intact forests in Yok Đôn national park, Nam Ka, Nam Nung, Tà Đùng reserve areas with various ecology systems.

- Human resources: At present time, the number of people in working age is 872,833 people, however the number of people in working age working in Dak Lak”s economy was 712,454 accounting for 42.73% the population. Trained labor was about 27.2%.

Infrastructures

- Transportation system: Transportation system includes roadway and airway. Dak Lak has important national highways of No. 14, 14C, 26, 27, 28. The national highway No. 14 connects Dak Lak with Đà Nẵng, Gia Lai, and Kon Tum. The national highway No. 26 connects Buôn Ma Thuột city with seaport city of Nha Trang, national highway No. 27 to Đà Lạt city and Phan Rang etc. There is an airport in Buôn Ma Thuột city with flights to Hanoi, Hồ Chí Minh city and Đà Nẵng.

- Power supply system: The power system has been rapidly developed. In 2005, all of 165 communes, wards and towns of the province were connected to the national grid.

- Post and telecommunication system: The system has been gradually modernized. There is telephone service available in all of the local districts.

- Industrial zones: Đắk Lắk has industrial zones of: Hoà Phú IZ (181ha) in Hoà Phú commune, Buôn Mê Thuột city.

Economic situations

- Growth rate: In the period of 2006 to 2010, the GDP growth rate increased by about 11-12% per year, of which industry and construction increased by 22-23%, agriculture and forestry increasedby 4.8-5% and services rose by 20-21%.The estimate GDP growth rate from 2011 to 2015 is about 12 -12.5%, of which industry and construction is forecasted to go up by 19.5 -20% and the estimated increase of agriculture, forestry and aquaculture is about 4.4-4.5% and that of services is approx. 13 – 14%.

- Economic structure: has been shifted in the way of increasing the proportion of industry – construction and services while decrease thatof agriculture – forestry – aquaculture. In the period of 2006 – 2010 the proportion of agriculture – forestry – aquaculture was about 48 % followed by that of services (30.5%) and that of industry – construction (20.5%). In 2020, It is estimatedboth the proportion of services and industry – construction increase to 40% and 34% respectively while that of agriculture – forestry – aquaculture is predicted to fell to 25%.
+ Export value in 2010 was 380 million USD and is estimated to be 600 million USD in 2015 and 1,000 million USD in 2020.
+ From 12% to 13% GDP participated in provincial budget in 2010 and this percentage was forecasted to rise to around 14% in 2015 and 17% in 2020.
+ In the period of 2006 to 2010, the total of social investment demand (according to current cost) was approx. 23 trillion VND. It is estimated to increase by about 62 trillion VND in the period of 2011 to 2016 and 148 trillion in the period of 2016 to 2020.
+ The capital increase rate in the period of 2006 to 2010 was 19.6% and it is estimated to increase to 22% in the period of 2011 to 2016 and19% in period of 2016 to 2020.

Investment attraction status


Up to 9 /2011, there were 104 investment projects with the total capital of 6,217 billion VND, of whichthere are 48 projects in an operation, 18 projects under construction and 38 ones were allowed.
