General information

- Geographic location: Thua Thien Hue is bounded by Quang Tri province to the North, by Da Nang to the South, by Laos to the West and by the sea to the East.

- Area: 5,065.3 km2.

- Topographic features:The province has 4 main kinds of topography which are: mountainous area, low hilly area, plains, rammers and lagoons and sandbanks near the sea.

- Administrative units: The province is divided into Hue city and 8 districts: Quang Dien, Phu Vang, Phu Loc, Phong Dien, Nam Dong, Huong Tra, Huong Thuy and A Luoi.

- Population: 1,090,000 people

- Natural resources: The province has various and plentiful mineral resources with over 100 mineral points. Major mineral found here are limestone, granite stone, kaolin, titan, peat, clay, mineral water, etc. Besides, the province has a coastal line of 128 km with 5 estuaries and many seafood types (approx. 500 types of fish, shrimp, etc.), in which approx. 30-40 species of high economic value such as lobsters, butterfish, codfish, etc.

- Tourism resources: Hue city, an ancient capital, preserves many cultural heritages in their original design. Situated on hills in the south of Huong River are beautiful mausoleums of Nguyen dynasty’s Kings, four of which are the most famous ones: Minh Mang, Tu Duc, Gia Long and Khai Dinh. The culture relic complex was ranked by UNESCO as the international culture heritages. Hue city, a Buddhism center of country, also has thousands of pagodas, of which there are many 300 year old ones. Another attraction of Hue is a poetic beauty of Huong River, Ngu mountain peak, Vong Canh hill where tourists can capture the whole view of the city and Lang Co beach. Moreover, coming to the city, tourists could have a chance to enjoy the royal music recognized by UNESCO as the international intangible heritage.

- Human resources: The province’s workforce was 607,000, accounting for 55.6% of the total population (2010) including over 100,000 science-technology staff, accounting for 16.9%. The number of workers participating in the national economy was 557,189 people including 257,447 female workers). There are higher education institutions in Hue city including 6 universities and 5 natural and social research centers.


- Transportation system: It is convenient to travel in/to/from the province with 4 main means of transportation which are roadway railway, waterway and airway. In terms of roadway, there are 2,500 km of several national highways (1A, 49, 49B, 14) running through the province. Besides, the North-South railway route running through the province well facilitates goods and passengers transportation. Regarding waterway, the province has 563km of river and many rammers and lagoons where there are Chan May deep-river port and Thuan An port. The province has Phu Bai international airport located near National Road No 1 and 15km from Hue city.

- Power supply system: National electricity grid supplies the province with electricity via 86km of 110Kv line from Da Nang to Hue and 80km of 220Kv line from Hoa Khanh to Hue. Besides that, the province hasa reserved power station for the case of peak hour of using electricity (Ngu Binh diesel power stationwith the capacity of 2x4000kVA). There are not only 9 power projects allowed by the Industry and Commercial ministry in the province but also 12 small scale hydropower projects are planned with the total of capacity of 106.5MW.

- Water supply systems and drainage: Thua Thien – Hue has a best quality and purest surface water resources compared to other provinces. It also has 10 water factories with the total capacity of 99,200m3 per day. In 2010, the capacity was improved to 206,500m3 per day.

- Industrial zones: Thua Thien Hue has one Economic zone which is Chan May-Lang Co (21,108 hectares) and 6 Industrial zones which are Phong Dien IZ (400 hectares), Phu Bai IZ (800 hectares), Tu Ha IZ (250 hectares), Phu Da IZ, La Son IZ and Quang Vinh IZ.
