General information

- Geographic location: Bac Giang is located at 21007'-21037 'north latitude and 105053'-107002' eastlongitude; Bac Giang is bounded by Lang Son province to the North and North-East, by Hanoi and Thai Nguyen province to the West and North-West, by Bac Ninh, Hai Duong, Quang Ninh provinces to the South and South-East. It is 50km from Hanoi, 110km from Huu Nghi international Gate, 130km from Hai Phong seaport and Cai Lan deep-seaport and near the crucial triangle economy region (Hanoi-Hai Phong-Quang Nịnh)

- Area: 3827.8 km2

- Topographic features: the province is characterized by features of both mountainous and midland areas. Low mountainous and hilly areas account for 72% of the province’s total area. Midland areas including districts of Tan Yen, Hiep Hoa, Viet Yen, Yen Dung, Lang Giang and Bac Giang town account for 28%.

- Administrative units: include Bac Giang town and 9 districts of Yen The, Tan Yen, Luc Ngan, Hiep Hoa, Lang Giang, Son Dong, Luc Nam, Viet Yen andYen Dung.

- Population: 1,560,200 people

Resources

- Natural resources: Bac Giang has 382,700 hectares of natural soil, in which 122,500 hectares of agricultural land, 51,200 hectares of used land and 133,700 hectares of forestry soil and many mineral mines with the estimated deposits of 114 million ton of coal in Yen The, Luc Ngan, Son Dong, 0.5 million ton of iron ore in Yen The, approx. 100,000 ton of copper ore in Luc Ngan, Son Dong, 3 million ton of kaolin in Yen Dung.

- Tourism resources: Bac Giang belongs to the Kinh Bac cultural area and has hundreds of material and intangible heritages, in which Quan Ho and Ca Tru folksongs were recognized by UNESCO as World Cultural Heritage. Besides that, there are numerous unique folk festivals and famous places. With these advantages, Bac Giang has great potential to develop tourism, particularly cultural tourism and ecotourism.

- Human resources: In 2010, the Bac Giang’s population reaches nearly 1.6 million people, in which people in working age accounted for 63.8% (about 1.02 million people). Education system in Bac Giang is diversified (1 university, 3 colleges, 7 vocational school and 82 training centers) so that the rate of trained labor is expected to be 60% in 2020.

Infrastructure

- Transportation: quite convenient with 3 railway lines crossing the province which are Hanoi – Lang Son, Hanoi – Thai Nguyen, Hanoi – Quang Ninh; more than 4,000km of roadway with newly built National highway No. 1A crossing the province creating links with districts, connection points can be developed to be industrial zones, clusters to attract investment. Besides, the province has 187km of waterway with 3 ports: A Lu and 2 specialized ports of Ha Bac Chemical and Nitrogenous Fertilizer Company. Bac Giang is building Dong Son container port which is 6km from Bac Giang city, bonded warehouses and domestic ports.

- Power supply system: The national grid provides electricity to each commune, including different voltage levels like 220, 110, 35 and 22. In addition, more substations are planned to construct. Recently, Bac Giang has completed the Son Dong thermal power station – 220 MW and planned to construct Luc Nam thermal power station – 100MW.

- Water supply: Water supply system was invested and fit water demand of urban and industrial areas.

- Post and telecommunication: are gradually developed to meet communication demand. Mobile phone wave covers most province; landline phone is connected in all communes and the ADSL is supplied two thirds of the number of commune in Bac Giang. Besides that, leased line is provided to centers of districts, town, industrial complexes and residential areas. 100% communes and wards have postal services.

- Industrial zones: Bac Giang has 5 industrial zones which are Dinh Tram with a total area of 101 hectares in 2 communes (Hoang Ninh and Hong Thai of Viet Yen district); Quang Chau with a total area of 426 hectares in 1 commune (Quang Chau of Viet Yen district); Song Khe – Noi Hoang with a total area of 32.09 hectares in Yen Dung district; Van Trung, with 960 hectares.

Economic situations

- Growth rate: the average growth rate was 8.7%/year for the period 1997 – 2007 (The province was re-organized in 1997), 9.3% in 2005, 9.5% in 2006, over 10% in 2007; Budget credit and export increased by 24.5-26%/year. In the period of 2006-2010, the average growth rate of GDP was over 9%/year, in which industry and construction increased by 17.7%, agriculture: 2.6% and services: 9.9%

1. the period of 2000-2010 (including domestics and foreign investment): attracted 619 projects with 31,830billion VND and 623.6 million USDregistered capital, in which:

- Domestic investment: 524 projects: 31,829 billion VND registered capital and 10,624 billion VND implemented capital

- Foreign investment: 95 projects: 626.6 million USD registered capital and 224.496 million USD implemented capital.
